Porcelain Production in the American Colonies
Colonial Americans had access to the raw materials needed to make porcelain, but lacked the skilled talent needed to establish and run a successful porcelain manufactory. Nonetheless, a few ambitious men inspired to establish American industries that would compete with foreign manufacturers attempted to manufacture porcelain in the 1700s. The most successful of these attempts was the American China Manufactory, established in 1770 and run by Gousse Bonnin (an Englishman) and George Anthony Morris (a Philadelphian). It closed in 1772. |
