"Boys' Municipal School," Manila, Philippines
Twelve-year-old Toribio Herrera, a young member of the Philippines' social elite, demonstrated his mastery of various lettering styles in this manuscript, part of a penmanship examination at the Boys' Municipal School in Manila. His national pride and personal identity are shown in a Philippine flag, a seashore scene with palms, a nipa house, and sailing ships, all under the protection of the Virgin Mary.
