Civil War Valentine Card
1860s
What Civil War soldiers sent home to their sweethearts
This Civil War-era valentine's card combined romantic love and love of country. The card's verse, "Love and Patriotism," reads:
My country's cause to serve,For her to do or die;Thy love my arm to nerve,Thy name my battle cry.

The valentine was probably the first of all greeting cards. |
