1852
"first American man of letters"
This is the end portion of a December 27, 1852, letter from writer Washington Irving to friend and business associate George P. Paterson. Irving had penned the letter in thanks for books he had received from Patterson at his Tarrytown, NY, home on Christmas morning. Irving has been dubbed the "first American man of letters" and his most famous tales--"The Legend of Sleepy Hollow" and "Rip Van Winkle"--the first American short stories.
