The California Shop
about 1938
A little bit of the Golden State in the Big Apple
During a trip to California in the 1930s, New Yorker Helen Misch Kemp realized that the merchandise on offer in the state differed greatly from what was available back home. As a result, she opened the California Shop in 1938, complete with fixtures shipped from the Golden State. To stock her store, Kemp made annual trips to the West Coast to select merchandise for her customers. Articles included women's clothing, preserves, flower containers, pottery, jewelry, and cookware. The business closed four years later, however, because of difficulties in obtaining merchandise during World War II.
