Nineteenth-Century Quilt
mid-1800s
Appliquéd with fruit and flowers
Mary Carpenter Pickering (1831-1900) of Ohio started this cotton quilt in about 1850, when her friend John Bruce Bell joined a wagon train for the Oregon Territory. After his return, they married on September 3, 1861. Appliqued with fruit and flowers, Pickering's quilt has been cherished by three generations of her family.
