Embroidered Picture
late 1800s

"Worked At Sea By J.M. ADAMS"
This silk embroidered picture depicts a number of vignettes from recent American history. Among them are the "DEATH OF ELLSWORTH," the first Union soldier killed in the Civil War (upper right), and a monument with the inscription "ERECTED IN MEMORY OF OUR HEROES OF CHARLESTOWN WHO FELL IN THE LATE CIVIL WAR" (lower left). Embroidered across the bottom of the pictures are the words, "WORKED AT SEA By J.M. ADAMS."
