Stoneware Jar
1862
"I made this jar all of cross/If you dont repent, you will be lost"
These words were inscribed across the top of this alkaline-glazed stoneware jar by its maker, David Drake, a slave at Lewis Miles Plantation Pottery in South Carolina's Edgefield District. Drake's two-line poems--about religion, love, and life--proclaimed his ability to read and write, skills that were often forbidden among slaves.
