John Hancock's Baby Rattle
1778
Patriot's plaything--with all the bells and whistles
This silver-and-coral rattle once belonged to the family of Massachusetts patriot John Hancock, the man who rattled the British in Boston. Hancock--first signer of the U.S. Declaration of Independence--bought the rattle for his young son. It has a whistle at one end and six silver bells.
