Blue and White American Coverlet
1817

"Sally Loper December 1817 Westbury Long Island"
The pattern of this blue and white coverlet is a stylized leaf-tree, with two motifs repeated in a step repeat in alternate horizontal rows. Woven information in each corner of the coverlet reads: "Sally Loper December 1817 Westbury Long Island." Sally Loper (nee Sarah Bishop) was born on November 19, 1786. When she was 18 she married Luther Loper, who had come to the United States as an indentured servant before qualifying as a lawyer. The Lopers had seven children. The coverlet remained in the family for more than 150 years before it was donated to the Smithsonian.
