Sheet from the Gutenberg Bible
1454

A page of history from the first great printed book
This page of history comes from the Gutenberg Bible, one of the first books printed in Europe from moveable type. Completed in Latin type patterned after German handwriting, the Bible is said to have been produced by Johannes Gutenberg in Mainz, Germany, in 1454. This page shows part of the fourth and fifth chapters of the Old Testament's Book of Nehemiah. Colors were applied to the page by hand after the text was printed.
