The Saint-Gaudens $20 Coin
1907
The most beautiful American coin?
An advancing figure of Liberty adorns the 1907 $20 coin, which has been called the most beautiful coin ever produced by the United States Mint. American sculptor Augustus Saint-Gaudens designed the gold coin in response to a request by President Theodore Roosevelt. An admirer of ancient Greek coins, Roosevelt wanted American coins to reflect the same ageless beauty and strength as those of the ancient world. The reverse of the coin features a flying eagle.
