Evening Gown
1945
Rayon crepe, sequins, rhinestones, and beads
Isabel Cooper Pine, the wife of the superintendent of the Coast Guard Academy, purchased this dress at Sport Shop in New London, CT, in 1945 and wore it to a concert at Connecticut College for Women. There, Pine was in for a shock. At the concert, one of the sopranos, Eleanor Steibes, was wearing the same Adrian designer dress. Decades later, Mrs. Pine may have been in for another shock. Although she believed her dress to be an Adrian original, subsequent research by Smithsonian staff reveals the dress was probably a "knock-off" or copy.
