George Washington's Uniform
1780s
The gentleman soldier
This is the only known surviving uniform owned and worn by George Washington. The general may have worn it when he resigned his commission at Annapolis, MD, in 1783. It came into the possession of the United States government through descendants of Martha Washington in 1828, when it was placed on display in the U.S. Capitol Building. The Smithsonian acquired the uniform in 1883.
